Timeline of Classical Music History

This is the same eight-era backbone as our Musical Eras section, with a few representative composers pinned to each one so the timeline isn't just abstract dates — click through to either the era or the composer to go deeper.

1. c. 500 – 1400 Medieval

   Chant, monophony, and the birth of written music.

2. c. 1400 – 1600 Renaissance

   Polyphony matures, and instrumental music finds its voice.

3. c. 1600 – 1750 Baroque

   Ornamentation, basso continuo, and the birth of opera.

   Composers: Bach, Handel, Vivaldi

4. c. 1750 – 1820 Classical

   Balance, clarity, and the sonata form that shaped everything after it.

   Composers: Mozart, Beethoven

5. c. 1820 – 1890 Romantic

   Bigger orchestras, bigger emotions, and music with a story to tell.

   Composers: Chopin, Tchaikovsky

6. c. 1890 – 1910 Late Romantic / Post-Romantic

   The Romantic era pushed to its lushest, largest extreme.

   Composers: Rachmaninoff

7. c. 1910 – 1945 20th Century / Modernist

   Composers break from tonality and reinvent what music could be.

   Composers: Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky

8. 1945 – present Contemporary / Modern Classical

   Minimalism, film scores, and a living, still-unfolding tradition.

   Composers: John Williams
