Kaija Saariaho was one of the most admired composers of her generation. Her music is famous for its luminous, shimmering textures, in which instruments, voices, and electronics melt into one another like light and color. Her opera L'Amour de loin is one of the most successful operas of the 21st century.

Life in brief

Saariaho was born in Helsinki in 1952. She studied visual arts before turning to music, and at the Sibelius Academy she was one of a group of young composers who founded the society Korvat auki ("Ears Open") to promote new music in Finland. She continued her studies in Germany, and in 1982 moved to Paris to work at IRCAM, the famous center for electronic music and research founded by Pierre Boulez. Paris remained her home for the rest of her life.

At IRCAM she explored how computers could analyze and transform sound, and the experience shaped all her music. Her orchestral works of the 1980s and 1990s brought international recognition, and her first opera, L'Amour de loin ("Love from Afar," 2000), created with the director Peter Sellars and the writer Amin Maalouf, was a triumph. In 2016 it became the first opera by a woman to be staged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York for more than a century.

Her last opera, Innocence (2021), about the aftermath of a school shooting, was hailed as a masterpiece. She died in Paris in 2023, at the age of seventy.

Music and style

Saariaho's music focuses on the color and texture of sound itself. Influenced by the French "spectral" composers, who built music from the analysis of sound waves, she created slowly changing, iridescent textures, often combining live instruments with electronics. Her music frequently evokes light, dreams, and nature, and despite its complexity it is sensuous, lyrical, and deeply expressive.
